ALERT: Because of the current overweight epidemic in today's youth, for the first time in recent history, the current generation of children and teens is not expected to live as long as their parents
THE PROBLEM
Being overweight is something that can be very painful to the individual inflicted with the condition and that pain can come in varying forms; physical, emotional and psychological. Asthma, diabetes, hypertension, orthopedic complications, sleep apnea, psychological effects and stigmatization are just some of the troubles associated with overweight children and adolescents.
However, the negative effects of obesity do not lie solely with the individual. According to the National League of Cities,
“… increases in childhood obesity may cost governments, businesses, and families $100 billion per year in future health costs, undermining the long-term health and vitality of communities.”
– National League of Cities
This is an epidemic that touches everyone in some way.
