Eight U-Va. lacrosse players have been charged with alcohol-related offenses during their careers at the school
Washington Post Staff Writers
Thursday, May 6, 2010
Eight of the 41 players on the roster of the University of Virginia men’s lacrosse team, including accused murderer George Huguely, have been charged with alcohol-related offenses during their careers at the school, according to court records.
The charges include underage alcohol possession, using a fake ID and driving while intoxicated, according to a review of records available online. Two players were found not guilty, while six were convicted or pleaded guilty. A ninth player was charged with underage possession of alcohol, but it is unclear whether he was attending U-Va. at the time. His case was dismissed.
Huguely’s arrest Monday in the death of Yeardley Love, a classmate and fellow lacrosse player, has focused scrutiny on Huguely’s earlier arrest for a drunken, violent confrontation with a police officer, and on his team’s reputation among students for hard partying.
The fatal altercation between Huguely and Love early Monday in her Charlottesville apartment may not have been their first violent encounter. Two months before Love’s death, two current and one former University of North Carolina lacrosse players intervened to separate Huguely from Love at a party on the U-Va. campus in Charlottesville, according to two sources with knowledge of the incident. The UNC players were in Charlottesville visiting with friends. Read the rest of this entry »

Virginia lacrosse player’s death stuns campus community
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The suspect’s lawyer called it a tragic accident. The arrest warrant called it premeditated murder. A court document described a terrible beating.
The last day of classes at the University of Virginia on Tuesday coincided with a series of developments in the murder case that has shocked and saddened this campus since news of it broke Monday.
George Huguely, 22, a member of the Virginia men’s lacrosse team, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Yeardley Love, 22, a member of the women’s lacrosse team.
According to affidavits filed requesting search warrants in the case:
•Huguely, who waived his Miranda rights, told police he shook Love and her head repeatedly hit the wall.
•She was found face down in a pool of blood on her pillow, with her right eye swollen shut and a large bruise on her face.
•Huguely told police he and Love had been in a relationship that had ended and he entered the apartment through an unlocked door before kicking in Love’s bedroom door. He said he took her computer but told police where to find it.
Charlottesville Police chief Timothy J. Longo, according to the Associated Press, said later Tuesday that his department was investigating whether Love received death threats by e-mail.
“This is tragic on many levels,” Longo said earlier in the day. “These are two young students. Every parent can relate. This touches everybody.” Read the rest of this entry »

Police charge Virginia lacrosse player with murder of athlete
George Huguely, a
University of Virginia men’s lacrosse player, was charged Monday with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Yeardley Love, a member of the school’s women’s lacrosse team.
At a bond hearing in Charlottesville on Tuesday, a control date was set for June 10 when a date for a preliminary hearing will be set.
Francis Lawrence, the attorney for Huguely read a statement after the bond hearing in which his client appeared on a video screen.
“Because this case involves an active, ongoing investigation, any comment on the specific facts would be inappropriate at this time. Until more information becomes available, it is our hope that no conclusions will be drawn or judgments made about George or his case. However, we are confident that Ms. Love’s death was not intended, but an accident with a tragic outcome. In the meantime, George is withdrawing from the University of Virginia and remains in the custody of authorities. Grief has descended on this community as we attempt to understand what happened and why. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who grieve this terrible loss.”
Charlottesville police responded to a call around 2:15 a.m. Monday, chief Tim Longo said. He said the initial 911 from Love’s roommate indicated Love, 22, had suffered an alcohol overdose, but Longo said detectives noted “obvious physical injuries to her body.” Read the rest of this entry »

Notre Dame star recruit dies after fall from hotel balcony
CINCINNATI — A top Notre Dame football recruit from Ohio died after falling from a hotel balcony while on spring break in Florida, a high school spokesman said Saturday.
Students at St. Xavier High School gathered on the football field Friday night to remember senior Matt James following reports of his death in Panama City Beach, Fla., spokesman Mark Motz said.
The 17-year-old James apparently died instantly after he fell from the third-floor balcony of the Days Inn Motel at around 6:30 p.m. Friday, police told WJHG-TV in Panama City.
Police had not confirmed James’ identity as of Saturday morning, but Motz said the school was “devastated” by the news. Motz said the impromptu vigil was organized as word of James’ death spread through social-networking sites such as Facebook. Read the rest of this entry »

Drug Free Sports
A new national study shows a significant increase in drug and alcohol abuse by teens, a reversal of what had been a decade-long decline. Released last week by the Partnership for a Drug-Free America and the MetLife Foundation, the Partnership Attitude Tracking Study reveals that more teens in grades nine-12 are using alcohol, ecstasy and marijuana. PATS data also recognized a shift in teen attitudes, notably a growing belief in the benefits and acceptability of drug use and drinking.
“Whenever there’s economic demise or social trauma, drug use in adults goes up and unfortunately it filters down to our kids,” said John Underwood, founder and president of the New York-based American Athletic Institute, who will speak tomorrow evening at a town hall meeting sponsored by the Tri-Community Coalition.
A former NCAA All-American, International-level distance runner and World Masters Champion, Underwood has coached and advised Olympic athletes and is an expert in the field of athletics and social drug use. Read the rest of this entry »

Judge rules against Haddonfield girl who challenged school’s off-campus drug-alcohol policy
By LAVINIA DeCASTRO • Courier-Post Staff • March 18, 2010
HADDONFIELD — An administrative law judge has ruled against the Haddonfield Memorial High School student who challenged the school board’s off-campus drug and alcohol policy.
In a ruling released on Tuesday, Administrative Law Judge John R. Futey refused to grant a stay that would prohibit the district from punishing the 15-year-old unidentified girl, saying her attorney failed to establish the existence of irreparable harm.
Haddonfield Superintendent Alan Fegley said through e-mail that the district “is pleased with this decision.”
The girl was the only student arrested during a Nov. 28 party at a home on Estaugh Avenue, but the district agreed not to discipline her under its 24-7 policy until the case was resolved.
Under the policy, students charged with drug and alcohol crimes must perform between 10 and 30 hours of community service and could be barred from participating in extracurricular activities. Consequences are more severe for repeat offenders, with mandatory drug and alcohol counseling encouraged for first offenders and required for subsequent offenses. Students in a position of leadership also suffer more severe consequences under the policy. Read the rest of this entry »

Decade-long decline in drinking, drugs ends, study shows
WASHINGTON - Alcohol and marijuana use among teens is on the rise, ending a decade-long decline, a study being released Tuesday found.
“I’m a little worried that we may be seeing the leading edge of a trend here,” said Sean Clarkin, director of strategy at The Partnership for a Drug-Free America, which was releasing the study. “Historically, you do see the increase in recreational drugs before you see increases in some of the harder drugs.”
The annual survey found the number of teens in grades 9 through 12 who reported drinking alcohol in the last month rose 11 percent last year, with 39 percent — about 6.5 million teens — reporting alcohol use. That’s up from 35 percent, or about 5.8 million teens, in 2008. Read the rest of this entry »

“Get down from there!”
January 25, 2010
By Adam Frank
My 15-year-old son and I had just come out of the movie theater. After two hours of the usual explosions and mayhem (I can’t really remember what movie we had seen) I made the mistake of telling him to wait outside while I chatted with a friend. Five minutes later I find him on the theater roof jumping from one large air conditioning unit to the other. “What are you crazy?” I yelled hoping to get him down, and us away, from there before the blue siren’s arrived.
Well, yes. Of course he’s crazy. He’s 15. Ever since we made the mistake of watching District B13 my son has become a fan of Parkour, which is like freestyle skiing without skis or snow or mountains. Practitioners of Parkour (or its variant Free-running) believe that a good time equals climbing straight up the face of impossibly high walls or leaping from the roof of one 10 story building to another (even if there happens to be a city street in between them). It is a mix of gymnastics, rock climbing and insanity. It’s beautiful, graceful and terrifying (if you are a parent). So of course my son loves it and yearns to be an adept. I am trying to guide him to something safer.
Which brings us to today’s question. What is the balance between the hardwiring evolution has given us and the cultural programming we have given ourselves? Read the rest of this entry »
